7 Days Lemosho Route
Overview
The 7-day Lemosho Route offers one of the most scenic and gradual ascents up Mount Kilimanjaro, passing through varied landscapes from lush rainforests to alpine deserts. With a lower starting elevation and extra acclimatization days, this route provides climbers with a high success rate to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Along the way, trekkers will witness stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, hike through beautiful valleys, and experience the iconic Barranco Wall. The adventure begins and ends in Moshi, with overnight stops at several camps including Mti Mkubwa, Shira, Barranco, Karanga, and Barafu Camps. After summiting Uhuru Peak, the descent follows the Mweka Route, ending at Mweka Gate.

Itinerary
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Elevation: 7,742 ft (2,360 m) to 9,498 ft (2,895 m) | Distance: 6 km / 4 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest
Depart from Moshi for Londorossi Gate (4 hours drive). After completing entry formalities, you will begin your hike through lush, undisturbed rainforest, arriving at Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree) for your first overnight stay.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
Elevation: 9,498 ft (2,895 m) to 11,500 ft (3,505 m) | Distance: 8 km / 5 miles
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours | Habitat: Heath
Today’s trek leads you out of the rainforest and into a savannah landscape with tall grasses and volcanic rock. You’ll cross rolling hills and streams before reaching Shira Ridge and descending to Shira 1 Camp, where you’ll have your first views of Kibo Peak.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 11,500 ft (3,505 m) to 15,190 ft (4,630 m) and down to 12,795 ft (3,900 m) | Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Climbing towards Lava Tower, this day serves as an important acclimatization opportunity. You’ll ascend to 4,600 meters before descending to Barranco Valley. The day ends at Barranco Camp, where you’ll rest after a challenging but rewarding day of hiking.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 12,795 ft (3,900 m) to 13,235 ft (4,035 m) | Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert
Begin the day by tackling the Barranco Wall, a steep climb that offers thrilling moments and incredible views. After crossing the ridge, the trail leads to Karanga Camp, where you’ll spend the night while taking in the views of the southern glacier of Kibo.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 13,235 ft (4,035 m) to 15,255 ft (4,640 m) | Distance: 4 km / 2.5 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert
The trail to Barafu Camp is short but steep, offering rugged views as you hike through a moon-like desert landscape. At Barafu Camp, you’ll prepare for the midnight summit attempt by resting and organizing your gear.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 15,255 ft (4,640 m) to 19,341 ft (5,895 m) and descend to 10,065 ft (3,080 m) | Distance: 15 km / 9 miles
Hiking Time: 10-14 hours (ascent and descent) | Habitat: Arctic / Alpine Desert
The summit attempt begins around midnight. Using headlamps, you’ll trek toward Stella Point (5,685 m), with the goal of reaching Uhuru Peak at sunrise. After celebrating at the highest point in Africa, you’ll descend back to Barafu Camp for a rest, and continue further down to Mweka Camp for your overnight stay.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 10,065 ft (3,080 m) to 5,380 ft (1,640 m) | Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 2-3 hours | Habitat: Rainforest
On the final day, you’ll descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After receiving your summit certificate, you will be transferred back to Moshi for a well-deserved rest and celebration of your achievement.
